WHAT IS A BERNEDOODLE?

Bernedoodles exhibit the most desirable qualities of both of their parents’ pedigree

WHAT ARE THE GENERATIONS OF BERNEDOODLES AND THEIR QUALITIES?

F1 Bernedoodles are a first generation cross where the puppy is 50% Bernese Mountain Dog and 50% Poodle.

  • Coat Type: Unknown (Straight, Wavy, or Curly)
  • Hypoallergenic: Variable.
  • Non-shedding: Variable.
  • Hybrid vigor: The most hybrid vigor out of all Bernedoodle generations.

F1b Bernedoodles are a backcross. Puppies are 25% Bernese Mountain Dog and 75% Poodle.

  • Coat Type: Wavy or Curly coat.
  • Hypoallergenic: Commonly hypoallergenic.
  • Non-shedding: Commonly non-shedding.
  • Hybrid Vitality: Yes, yet less so than F1 Bernedoodles due to the fact that they are the 2nd generation.

F1bb Bernedoodle is a cross between an F1B Bernedoodle (75% Poodle, 25% Bernese Mountain Dog) and also an original purebred 100% Poodle or 100% Bernese Mountain Dog, resulting in 87.5% Poodle & 12.5% Bernese Mountain Dog.

  • Coat Type: Curly coat
  • Hypoallergenic: The most hypoallergenic of the 1st generation Bernedoodle.
  • Non-shedding: The most non-shedding 1st generation Bernedoodle.
  • Hybrid Vigor: Yes, yet less so than F1 and also F1B Bernedoodle generations because they are the third generation of Bernedoodle.

F2 Bernedoodles are a second generation cross, which means an F1 Bernedoodle crossed with an F1 Bernedoodle, which results in 50% Poodle and 50% Bernese Mountain Dog.

  • Coat Type: Extremely variable and unpredictable. Straight, wavy, or curly.
  • Hypoallergenic: Uncertain.
  • Non-shedding: Unpredictable.
  • Hybrid vigor: Yes, however less so than the F1 generation.

F2B Bernedoodle is a cross between an F1 Bernedoodle (50% Poodle, 50% Bernese Mountain Dog) as well as an F1B Bernedoodle (75% Poodle, 25% Bernese Mountain Dog)., resulting in 62.5% Poodle and 37.5% Bernese Mountain Dog.

  • Coat type: Wavy or Curly.
  • Hypoallergenic: More than likely. However, there are certainly exceptions.
  • Non-shedding: More than likely. However, there are certainly exceptions.
  • Hybrid vigor: Yes, however less so than the F1 generation.

F2BB Bernedoodle is a cross in between an F2B Bernedoodle (62.5% Poodle, 37.5% Bernese Mountain Dog) and a purebred 100% Poodle. This is the 2nd backcross with the Poodle and part of the 2nd generation so it obtains a second “B” in its name which is why it is described as an F2BB Bernedoodle. In the end, you have 81.25% Poodle and 18.75% Bernese Mountain Dog.

  • Coat Type: Almost always curly.
  • Hypoallergenic: One of the most hypoallergenic Bernedoodles.
  • Non-shedding: One of the most hypoallergenic Bernedoodles.
  • Hybrid Vigor: Yes, but much less so than F2 and also F2B Bernedoodle Generations.

F3 Bernedoodle or Multi-generation Bernedoodle are numerous generations of Bernedoodle reproducing normally backcross breeding to the Criterion Poodle.

  • Coat Type: Generally wavy or curly.
  • Hypoallergenic: Generally, yes.
  • Non-shedding: Generally, yes.
  • Hybrid Vigor: The least amount of all Bernedoodle Generations.

WHAT ARE THE SIZES OF BERNEDOODLES?

(Please note these are approximate weights. We do not guarantee weights or heights)

  • Mini – Approximately 35-50 pounds
  • Small Standard – Approximately 55-80 pounds
  • Larger Standard – Approximately 70-100 pounds

WHAT TYPES OF BERNEDOODLES DO WE BREED?

Since we are a new breeding program, we only breed standard F1 Bernedoodles. In 2025, we do plan to expand to include F1b standard Bernedoodles.

WHAT IS THE BERNEDOODLE LIFESPAN?

Bernedoodles are hardy dogs that are expected to live anywhere from 10 to 16 years of age; barring any major health complications or external factors.

WHAT IS THE BERNEDOODLE COAT LIKE?

A Bernedoodle coat will be thicker, and they can range between straight, wavy, or even curly coats, depending on how the genes of the dog present themselves. The coats will generally be a thicker consistency and some Bernedoodles may have an undercoat in wintertime similar to the Bernese Mountain Dog coat. F1 Berendoodles are compatible for most families with MILD allergies as they may shed lightly. It is possible some can have moderate shedding.

WHAT COLORS DO BERNEDOODLES COME IN?

Bernedoodles may come in a variety of colors, depending on how the genes of their parents present as the puppy grows. Options that are most common are:

  • Tri-color, with the three main colors that are similar to Bernese Mountain Dogs
  • Diluted or Merle, which has lighter tones of the original colors
  • Sable, which have black-tipped fur patterns
  • Brindle, which has the tri coloration but in a mixed pattern
  • Phantom, which is generally one color with a lighter color on certain points of the body (like eyebrows or paws)
  • Black and White

WHAT IS THE BERNEDOODLE TEMPERAMENT LIKE?

Bernedoodles are designed to be affectionate, intelligent, and serene companion dogs; mxing the best of both worlds between the Bernese Mountain Dog, which is generally very laid back and sweet, and the Poodle, which is smart, motivated, and loyal.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH CONCERNS OF A BERNEDOODLE?

As with all purebred dogs, there are potential health concerns to be aware of but because these dogs are a crossbreed, there are fewer concerns to keep an eye out for. Bernedoodles may be prone to joint dysplasia, including that of the hips and elbows in particular. In addition, eye problems may arise and they are at risk for different types of cancer. As you would with any furry family member, be sure to bring your dog to the vet regularly for checkups, testing and regular health maintenance.
